When you prepare to order your first avatar, it is easy to get caught up in visual details like color palettes, clothing styles, and lore. However, an avatar is not just an illustration. It is an interactive puppet that reacts to your face in real time.
Many new creators run into problems because they do not plan the technical movement—known as the rig—before hiring an illustrator and a rigger. If your artist draws a design that cannot move the way you want, or if you ask for complex features you will never use on camera, you end up wasting effort on both sides.
Here is how to evaluate your content style, pick the right level of movement, and prepare clean specifications before you contact an artist.
1. Match Rig Movement to Your Stream Format
Not every creator needs extreme head turns or full-body physics. The type of content you stream should determine how complex your model needs to be.
Seated Gaming and Commentary
If you plan to play fast-paced games, your eyes will be glued to your screen, and your face may stay relatively still. A compact avatar box in the corner of the stream does not show tiny details well.
- What you need: Clean mouth tracking for speaking, responsive eye blinks, gentle breathing motion, and basic head tilting (Angle Z).
- What you can skip: Complex body turns (Body XYZ), extreme hair bouncing, or minute finger physics.
Just Chatting and Reaction Content
If your avatar sits in the center of the screen while you tell stories, interview guests, or react to videos, viewers focus directly on your face and body language.
- What you need: Wide head turns (Head X and Y), expressive eyebrow movement, accurate mouth shapes (mouth form tracking), and natural hair and cloth physics.
- What you can skip: Full-body locomotion or leg tracking, unless you plan to stand up.
3D and VR Motion
If you plan to use a 3D model instead of 2D, consider your tracking hardware early. Full-body tracking requires dedicated room sensors and space. If you only have a desktop webcam or a mobile phone camera, a seated 3D avatar with upper-body tracking is much more reliable.
2. The Expression Trap: Pick Five, Not Fifty
Beginners often want a massive menu of custom expressions: crying eyes, hearts, anger marks, sparkle eyes, sweat drops, and shadow faces.
In practice, managing dozens of hotkeys during a live broadcast is difficult. When you are focused on talking to your chat or surviving a game, you will rarely remember which key triggers which emotion. Most streamers use only three to five key expressions regularly.
Before ordering, decide on a small, practical core set:
- One positive emotion: Joy, sparkles, or a shy blush.
- One negative emotion: A sweat drop, dark shadow, or teary eyes for comedic moments.
- One shock emotion: Wide, tiny pupils or pale face.
- One stream utility toggle: Holding a mug, wearing glasses, or holding a microphone.
Keeping your list short keeps your commission clear and prevents your rigger from spending days setting up hotkeys you will never touch.
3. Plan Layer Separation with Your Illustrator
If you hire an illustrator and a rigger separately, the biggest bottleneck is usually the art file (often a layered PSD). A rigger cannot make hair sway or eyes blink smoothly if the artist has flattened those parts into one single layer.
Before your artist starts drawing, establish these technical points:
- Separate moving parts: Bangs, side hair, back hair, ears, upper and lower eyelids, eyelashes, whites of the eyes, irises, upper and lower lips, and tongue must all live on separate layers.
- Hidden areas must be drawn: The artist must draw behind the bangs (the forehead and full eyebrows) and behind the eyes (the skin underneath). When the head turns, hidden skin becomes visible.
- Symmetry and line art: Symmetrical designs often turn more predictably in 2D software. If your character has complex asymmetrical jewelry or tattoos across the face, ask the rigger first how that affects turnaround time.
If your illustrator has never drawn for Live2D before, ask them to review standard model cutting guides before delivering the final file. A little preparation prevents weeks of asking for redraws.
4. Decide on Advanced Tracking Features Early
Tracking software has advanced rapidly. Today, you can track tiny mouth movements and subtle cheek puffs using standard mobile cameras and webcams. However, your model must be built to support these specific tracking parameters from the start.
Mouth Tracking: Vowels vs. Simple Open/Close
- Basic tracking: The mouth opens when you make noise and closes when you stop. This is simple, reliable, and easy to set up.
- Phoneme tracking (A-I-U-E-O): The rig changes mouth shape based on the vowel sound you make. This looks natural for singing and voice acting, but requires far more drawing layers and tuning.
Advanced Face Tracking (AR-Based)
Features like tongue sticking out, cheek puffing, and independent eyebrow raises require detailed rigging. If you plan to stream with a basic webcam in low room light, these features may not track reliably anyway. Only request advanced facial tracking if your room lighting and camera hardware can support it.
5. Revisions and File Handoffs
Clear communication about technical deliverables avoids misunderstandings between creators across different timezones and languages.
When commissioning your team, clarify these points in your initial agreement:
- Test environment: Ask which tracking software the rigger will use to test your model. Ensure it matches what you plan to run on your streaming PC.
- Correction limits: Rigging always requires adjustment. Agree in advance on how many rounds of tuning you get to fix tracking glitches or awkward clipping.
- Source files: Clarify whether you will receive the raw rigging project files or only the exported runtime files needed for tracking apps. If you want another rigger to add outfits in the future, you may need the editable project files.
